Thoughts on Faith and Religion

Jesus the Prophet but Not the Son?

Islam claims that Moses, Jesus and Muhammad were all prophets of the Abrahamic god but Jesus was not the son of god. Christianity, it claims, got that part wrong. On its surface, this sounds simple enough. However, it raises questions about the divine plan of this Islamic god if it is true.

Quite the mistake
For a prophet of a god to become his son is no minor misunderstanding. While Islam claims Christian scriptures were corrupted, it does not exactly explain when, where and how. When did this error start? Who started it and why?

What was Allah doing?
If to error is human, should not doing something to correct those errors be divine? Allah is supposed to know and see all. Would not he have seen the words of his prophet being totally misunderstood and corrupted? Why would he allow such an error to start? If the error was accidental, why not simply guide the minds of his early followers to correct them? If it was intentional, why not stop so many of his followers from being misled? While the intentions of some Christians can be questioned, there is no denying a great majority of them are sincere in their beliefs and want to follow their god’s will as closely as possible. Why let such people be led astray in such a big way?

Correcting errors
On top of letting this problem get started, one has to wonder about the way it was supposedly corrected. If Christianity got so many things wrong that Allah needed to correct, why did he wait over 500 years to correct them through Muhammad? How many generations lived and died not knowing what they believed about their god was mistaken?

Making it believable
After letting the errors get started, waiting so long for them to firmly take root, any god wanting to correct those mistaken beliefs surely would know strong action would be needed. After all, people do not change their religions easily, and the Bible warns of false prophets.

With all this in mind, surely any would know that people would require dramatic events before changing their thinking. It would make sense to start with the leaders of Christianity. Show them they were mistaken and then show everyone else or do it all at the same time. It would be very simple for any being with the power to create the universe to offer the kinds of miracles that would quickly convince all but the insane. Any god should be able to easily communicate something to all humanity so that all humanity can understand very easily, quickly and without confusion.

So, what does this god do in his wisdom? Of all the methods available to being with infinite power, he decides to communicate through one man in one language in a remote corner of the world. Furthermore, this god does not give one clear, irrefutable miracle! Would not this god know many would not believe Muhammad, that it would take thousands of years for everyone to even hear what he said or that this would lead to confusion and conflict? Why present his final word to humanity in a way that leaves absolutely no distinction between the claims of a man who is supposed to be his prophet from any of the other wild claims about divine truth so many others have made.

In conclusion
Looking at the bloodshed between Christianity and Islam that has lasted to this day, one has to wonder what this god could have been thinking. Any person with reasonable intelligence should have seen it coming. A thoughtful, intelligent, caring god should have also and taken steps to avoid it. It seems that either this god is not very thoughtful or Muhammad was simply lying, like many others have done, about his supposed revelations.
